Safety and guidelines

Working with horses during a photoshoot should feel fun, safe and relaxed. Your session can take place either at Hacienda Los Ponce or at a travel location within 15 km, whichever fits your vision. A handler is with you at all times to position the horse and keep the session smooth and safe. Please arrive a few minutes early so you can be introduced to the horse and go over the basic safety guidelines.

For your own safety, follow the handler's instructions, approach the horse calmly and avoid sudden movements. Riding shots may be available depending on your comfort and on the horse chosen for the session. Horses arrive groomed and photo-ready, with optional styling such as braids or a loose mane.

Barbara is the horse used most often for photo sessions. She is steady and dependable with a quiet strength, and she is one of the most trusted horses here for both training work and photographs. You can read about her and the rest of the herd on the horses page.

Riding sessions

On the horse, not just beside it.

If you want to be on the horse rather than beside it, say so when you book and you get matched to the right one. A handler stays with you throughout, the same as every other session.

Questions

Booking a session.

Which horses can I rent, and what can I do with them?

Three of the five. Dolly is for rent and suits beginner riders for barrel racing and gymkhana. Cha Cha is for rent for intermediate riders for gymkhana, and he is not a beginner horse, and he is also for sale at $1,500. Barbara is for rent for Paso Fino shows. Paco is for sale at $7,000. Rental rates depend on the date and the event, so ask me and I will give you a number.

How much does a photo session cost?

Sessions start at $150 an hour at the barn in Isabela. From $250 an hour if I bring a horse to you, and the first 15 km is included. Somebody holds the horse either way. The photographer is not included, but ask me and I will give you names.

If you want a horse brought to a location outside the included 15 km, that is a transport job and it gets quoted the same way as any other haul. If you want the horse standing quietly and leading properly before the camera comes out, that is what the training program does, and you can see the work on the training videos page. Sessions at Hacienda Los Ponce are in Isabela, on the northwest coast.

Before your session

  • Sessions take place at Hacienda Los Ponce, or at a travel location within 15 km.
  • A professional handler is present at all times.
  • Arrive a few minutes early so you can be introduced to the horse before we start.

A handler is with the horse the whole time. Anyone who rides during a session signs the release of liability beforehand, and it is published in full so there are no surprises on the day.
